What is your initial reaction when you hear that a pastor smokes marijuana? What are you feeling?

This is a question that will hit everyone differently. It just depends on whether you are a religious person or not.

My family comes from a Christian background. So naturally, I would think that pastors should not smoke cannabis at all. They are leaders that should set a good example for all Christian members.

However, cannabis in Canada has been changing rapidly over the last decade. In 2018, it is now legal to smoke cannabis and buy online weed!

There is actually a deeper question you should ask instead. Does the pastor smoking weed affect his ability to preach? Does it actually affect his performance on the job?

Let’s begin to explore the question of “Should A Pastor Ever Smoke Marijuana?”

Should A Pastor Smoke Weed?

First of all, I just want to say that there is really no right or wrong answer to this. In the Bible, it states that the “responsibility to lead a church is both a high and holy calling.”

So if a pastor smokes weed, did he disqualify himself from becoming a good pastor?

On the other hand, cannabis can be used for a variety of medicinal reasons. A pastor may be using weed to reduce anxiety just before a sermon.

There are many health reasons to use cannabis. It is not just used for recreational reasons.

What Do People Think About This?

Here are just some of the answers that people answered with:

“Marijuana is a herb-bearing seed. God gives us natural things of the earth to heal. It’s the healing of the nation. Why you think they locked people up for having weed, because the doctors would stop making money. Marijuana is not bad. It’s good for asthma, cancer, glaucoma, anxiety. Just to name a few. “Pot kills ambition and affects your critical thinking skills. It may have some medical benefits but should not be used for recreational purposes.” – Al H

“I think that is between the Pastor and God. I do think that as Pastor, he is expected by God and man to lead his congregations higher . So I think it also would concern those whom he is around. Because if he can’t do it without guilt it’s probably not right for him or her.” – Karen A

“Considering that GOD makes it, I should think it would be HIGHLY ENCOURAGED by The Most High to do so. Yes!!!” – Matt W

“It depends. Our individual relationship with God will drive our convictions. If God tells a pastor to keep their temple free from smoking, then NO. However, a pastor with no conviction may choose not to engage in any activity that may cause culturally, systemically, or traditionally seen as unholy to others to preserve the kingdom.” – Charice M

Smoking Cannabis VS Regular Medicine

People use medicine for many sorts of health reasons. In the same way, cannabis can be used for health reasons as well.

Nowadays, it is not uncommon for doctors to prescribe cannabis as a health treatment.

As long as cannabis is used in a controlled manner, it does have many long-term benefits. Cannabis is merely just an organic plant after all.

Smoke Weed = Cannot Be A Pastor?

In the Bible, being “drunk” means you are losing control of your body’s ability. Drinking in itself is not a sin. Getting drunk is.

This is similar to how you can “get drunk (get high)” off cannabis.

If a pastor is able to control himself to not get high off cannabis, it is technically not a sin.

However, there is still a gray area on whether a pastor should use cannabis for medicinal reasons. There are just other alternatives that they can use.
